Introducing Dark Loch Studios – 🎲 Welcome to the Table

There was a time when your weekends meant something.

When you and a few close friends would push aside the chaos of the real world—school, jobs, relationships, or worse—and sit down together to roll dice, tell stories, and escape into a world that felt yours.

You didn’t just play characters. You lived them. And even when life pulled you apart, something about those moments stuck.

We built Dark Loch Studios both because we missed that feeling and because we know we’re not the only ones.

Who We Are

Dark Loch Studios is a game development studio born out of Japan that eventually moved to Sweden, with an international team made up of old-school gamers, writers, worldbuilders, and parents—just like you.

We’re not chasing trends. We’re not trying to “out-Wizards” Wizards of the Coast. We’re not interested in selling sanitized escapism dressed up as fantasy or pushing some subliminal political agenda. That’s someone else’s game.

Instead, we want to go back in time with you, to a time when none of that stuff mattered. When bold and controversial ideas weren’t considered bannable offenses but avant-garde pioneering of storytelling frontiers.

Our game is called Threnody for Archaea.

And we’re not here to save the world. We’re here to remind you of what made it magical in the first place.

Why We Made Threnody for Archaea

We made a game like Threnody for Archaea because games like the Final Fantasy VII Remake failed us.

Not because it had bad graphics or gameplay—but because it forgot who it was for. Who the original audience was while trying to please too many people.

It abandoned the people who made it a legend.

Like many of you, we grew up on games that treated storytelling as sacred. Games that didn’t need to be ironic or socially engineered.

They just had to be honest. They had to be epic. They had to mean something.

Threnody for Archaea is a high dark fantasy tabletop RPG designed for long-form storytelling, deep character legacies, and mythic campaigns where even death is just another chapter.

It was built for remote play, because most of us now live far from the people who knew us best. And it features a living world—your character may die, but their choices ripple forward. They may shape the ending of the entire campaign… even from beyond the grave after you create a new character.

We made this game because the friendships we built around the table years ago still matter to us. And we want to help you revive yours—no matter the distance, no matter the schedule.

Who’s Leading This Thing?

My name is Mike Norton, and I didn’t originally intend to be the CEO of a game studio.

I came in as a passive investor, having discovered the initial team through my own personal journey of exploring Norse heritage—just someone who saw the spark of something special in this team and wanted to support it. But as the project evolved, and the vision deepened, I was eventually asked to take the reins.

I accepted the invitation because I believe in what we’re doing. And more than that, I believe in the kind of players we’re doing it for.

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t have 150 hours for an open-world sidequest grind, but does have one night a week where you can reconnect with your old crew for a couple hours—that’s who we design games for.

If you’re tired of shallow content that preaches instead of delivers, and want a world that rewards loyalty, brotherhood, sacrifice, and legend—you’re already one of us.

What’s Coming Next

We’re just getting started.

You can look forward to:

  • Weekly livestreams with the crew (design diaries, dev updates, GM roundtables, actual plays)
  • Behind-the-scenes peeks at worldbuilding, lore drops, and system design
  • Free player resources, including character sheets, world primers, and starter quests
  • Community spotlights for people running games, making art, and telling stories in the world of Archaea

Most importantly, you’ll get a place to belong again. A digital campfire where people like us gather to roll dice and remember who we were—and who we still are.

Join Us

We’re inviting you to come back to the table.

Whether you’re a longtime player or someone who hasn’t gamed in years, Threnody for Archaea was built to carry your stories forward. Not with token nods to nostalgia, but with a deep, reverent respect for it. This is a game where your choices stick. Where your character matters. And where your friends, no matter how far they’ve drifted, can still come home.

We’re glad you’re here.

Mike Norton
CEO, Dark Loch Studios
