Threnody for Archaea Is Coming to PC: A First Look at The Keep

For years, Threnody for Archaea has lived at the table: dice in hand, character sheets spread out, the story moving one roll at a time. This fall we started building a second way into Archaea. Threnody for Archaea is becoming a 3D video game for PC, built in Unreal Engine 5, and today we are sharing the first look.

The Keep

Our first chapter is a playable demo called The Keep, about twenty-five minutes from first step to final blow.

The Keep stands at the heart of the Mistlands. For a thousand years it has been guarded by Rulic’Sha, son of Harot, keeper of the last relics that Tek’Tith the Betrayer still hunts. Before dawn, the treasury was opened without force. One thing was taken: the Feather of Destiny, Harot’s silver artifact that writes fate.

Your party has to find out who took it. Question the castellan, the captain of the guard, a lady of the court, the keeper of the library and a dice-runner with too many debts. Search the vault, the kitchens and the records room. Follow the trail wherever it leads, including under the Keep itself. We won’t spoil the rest.

The Keep opens on Loren’s ink-wash art. Every story screen in the demo is framed by her work.

A Party of Four, One From Each Race

You lead four heroes, one from each of the major races of Archaea:

  • Hrodmar Hask, a Varan of the Khezardun, the Jarls of the Sea.
  • Ilyth Venn, a Lyrian of the Aelinorin, the forest lurkers, with her recurve bow.
  • Ingvild Thrallborn, a Human born to the Khezardun thralls, who calls down the storm.
  • Kesh’Tavar, a Zarian of the Boa’Rin, the truth bringers, whose prayers can bless the whole party.

Step Inside: The Third-Person View

Press one key and the camera drops from high above the battlefield to just over your hero’s shoulder. Walk the courtyard yourself, look up at the walls, and turn to face whoever stands in your way. The rest of the party falls in behind you. Point at a person or a clue and press a key to talk or take a closer look. Switch heroes at any time and walk as any of the four. Press the key again and you are back in the tactical view.

Built on the Real Rules

When steel is drawn, the game switches to the tactical view on its own. Fights are turn based, in the spirit of Baldur’s Gate 3: the camera hangs over the battlefield, you move each hero in turn, and every attack is decided by dice you can see. Those dice are the rulebook’s dice. Strength, Dexterity, Mind and Resolve. Vigor, Sanity, Arcane and Blessing. Initiative on a D10, armor rolls to soak the hit, and the horrors under the Keep cost you Sanity the first time you lay eyes on them. If you have played Threnody for Archaea at the table, you already know how this game works. When the fight is won, you are back on your own two feet.

Talk, Search, Decide

Not every problem is solved with a blade. Conversations use the same skills as the tabletop game: Persuasion, Leadership, Deception, Knowledge. A failed roll never ends the story; it closes one door and leaves you to find another. Clues you uncover open new things to say, and your journal keeps track of what you know.

Torchlight and Stone

The Keep is lit by torches, braziers and moonlight, with fog creeping through the courtyard and the passages below. Every character now moves with a full set of animations: idle stances, runs, attacks, hits and falls. The heroes and the people of the Keep are being built to match the four races of the rulebook: Humans, Varans, Lyrians and Zarians. New screenshots will follow once they are in. The world, the rules and the story are ours.

Where We Are Today

The Keep is playable from beginning to end on PC. Every scene, every clue, every conversation and all three battles work, in the tactical view or on foot in third person, and it runs as a standalone Windows game. Next on the list are sound and music, spell effects, Loren’s designs for the heroes, and long nights of playtesting.

What Comes Next

We plan to put The Keep in your hands. Our goal is to share the demo with our community and our Kickstarter backers, listen hard to what you tell us, and use it to decide how far into Archaea the full game goes. The rulebook stays at the heart of everything we make. The game is a second door into the same world, and it opens onto the same table you have always sat at.

The Guardian has kept his watch for a thousand years. Soon you will keep it with him.
